Five Reasons Why Home Physiotherapy is The Best Way to Heal

The best physiotherapy occurs in the home. Here are five reasons why this is true and why going to a clinic may no longer be the most patient-centered approach to care.

  1. We do everything in the home! From daily chores, taking care of children or loved ones, catching up on work, to exercising and going to sleep, there is a tremendous amount of activity that occurs in a home. Regardless of the reason one needs physiotherapy, any impairment will likely be experienced with some or all of the above tasks. Having a consultation and treatment plan in the environment where you function the most will help create a personalized experience that is best suited for you.
  2. Clinics are designed to process patients in a high volume. With home physiotherapy, you get one-to-one care from an expert physiotherapist that is focused on you, in your environment and has the context of your life to create goals and recovery milestones. You don’t need fancy equipment or heavy weights. The beauty of effective manual physiotherapy is that you can do more with less. The right exercises with the correct technique will be more effective than wasteful machines, modalities, and non-evidence based interventions.
  3. Physiotherapy is most often required when you are vulnerable in life. You may be in pain. You may have had recent surgery. Your parent may be recovering from a medical illness such as a stroke or may simply need help aging gracefully. Guess what? This is the least convenient time to get in a car, drive to a clinic, and wait to get care. Having the right care delivered to you optimizes your comfort level and obviates unnecessary pain or hardship.
  4. Home physiotherapy saves time. You don’t have to drive (sometimes you can’t). There is no parking. No hanging around in waiting rooms. Based on our data, home physiotherapy in urban areas saves patients’ 45 minutes per appointment. If you have a treatment plan that consists of 10 appointments, that would equate to over 7 hours of lost productivity!
  5. Home healthcare is the future. In a world where convenience and customer service is the norm, trends such as home delivery (uber eats, groceries) and home gyms (peleton) reinforce that moving services from institutions to the home is a preference among patients and customers. For the aging population, more support at home is a must and governments around the world also realize that services such as physical therapy are necessary to help this population prevent injury, maintain function and independence.
