How It Works - Calgary

We bring everything to you. Save time and leave out the confusion.

No one should suffer in pain. For Calgary residents, pain and injury may prevent you from doing the things you love around home, work and beyond. Whether it is a chronic condition, sports injury, traumatic accident or post-surgical rehab, everyone should have options to recover as comfortably as possible. Fortunately, there are many physiotherapy options located near you in the Stampede City. From publicly funded clinics, in-patient hospital rehab programs, private clinics and newer managed physiotherapy services like Therapia, each has their own benefits and drawbacks.

As an industry overview, there are over 1663 listed licensed physiotherapists in Calgary, of which 1195 are female (for patients who have specific preferences). Each therapist likely has their own set of specializations and work experience in hospitals or private clinics. We have compiled a brief summary of specialists in the tables below.

In terms of private clinic options, over 180 physiotherapy clinics exist across Calgary, making this the dominant method of care for most patients. When browsing clinics, Calgarians should start with focusing on the few physiotherapists near you and see if they meet your criteria. Across Calgary, there are less than 20 clinics that boast a 4.5 stars or higher average review (make sure to check that the posters are real profiles). With regards to pricing, an hour-long session at most clinics range from $80-$125 and the vast majority of patients use their extended health benefits plan to help pay for services. Some offer direct billing to your insurance provider, while others ask for upfront payment first and issue you a receipt to submit for reimbursement after. When selecting clinics, don’t forget the hidden costs of travelling back-and-forth per each session, which may be too painful and inconvenient for patients trying to recover from trauma, surgery or chronic conditions.

Few of these physiotherapy clinics in Calgary have contracts with Alberta Health Services. These are typically the large chains that process high volumes of patients each year. Note that only certain conditions/injuries can be treated using this option, such as severe accidents and specific post-surgical cases. Last reported, patients may get up to 7 sessions from AHS covered here. While this sounds like an ideal option, consider the drawbacks of being waitlisted (potentially months), having a limited selection of providers, and receiving mass-market care designed to process patients under limited public resources. Often, priority will trickle down to applicants who prove to be disadvantaged and unable to access other forms of care.

Therapia is a newer option for receiving physiotherapy near you in Calgary. Started in 2016 to provide an alternate means to institutionally-based care, our platform brings the right licensed physiotherapists to your doorstep while our expert care team helps to manage the whole process from onboarding, therapist matching, scheduling, and invoicing. Started by a team of healthcare professionals (orthopaedic surgeon, family physician and 2 physiotherapists), we have facilitated over 35,000 quality treatment sessions in locations where we have service. Our program is highly rated on Google at 4.9 stars, from patients across the country. We take pride in operating a platform that offers highly personalized service while keeping costs affordable in line with what you would receive at clinics or less.

We actively work to ensure that our team of physiotherapists are among the best in your community. These are licensed physiotherapists that live in communities near you in Calgary – Parkdale, Castleridge, Killarney – and have made themselves available for home visits through Therapia. Each therapist is hand-selected for their accomplishments and often have previously worked at traditional clinics.

We do not require a doctor’s referrals to start. Call or book an onboarding appointment with our team today to learn more.

Frequently Asked Questions in Calgary

Are your services covered by Alberta Health Services?

No. Similar to most private clinics, Therapia is not funded by Alberta Health Services. We are privately funded and operated and are proud to offer a premium physiotherapy service to Albertans as an alternative to long waitlists and impersonal service.

What forms of payment do you accept?

When you book your initial appointment, your credit card information will be entered into our secure platform. This credit card will be billed after each appointment is completed. Therapia does not store your credit card information. We utilize a third-party payment processing company called Stripe to safely process the transaction.

How do I get reimbursed by my insurance company for my physical therapy sessions?

Your credit card will be used to make a reservation for your appointment. You will not be charged until after your appointment is completed, at which point we will automatically email you a reimbursable receipt. You can forward this receipt to your insurer for reimbursement. Given that all our physiotherapists are licensed professionals, all insurers and extended benefits plans will accept this receipt as documentation for reimbursement.
